Bucharest in Figures
Bucharest lies on 0.8% of Romania - 228 sqkm. It has a population of 1.926.334 (according to a ... in 2002).In 1930 there used to be roughly 600.000 people in Bucharest, and 1.800.000 in 1977. In '92 there were over 2 million inhabitants, ut the number kept droppingd, due to low natality rates and high immigration.
It is worth noticing that the city has a higher feminin component (2-3 hundred thousand women more than men). It also has plenty of grandparents - 360.000 senior citizens (over 60 yrs) and only 220.000 children under 14.
What's left is about 1.300.000 working souls: 700.000 tax payers, 23.000 make up lines at unemployment offices and 500.000 are still in schools. To make up the round sum we have unregistered unemlpoyed people, those hired on te black market and people who work at home, etc.

When it comes to money, statistical data tells us that the average wages amounts to 8 million lei (230 eur) and working in public administration, industry and transportation pays better.
As regards the urban habitat, in 2004 there were 1.900.000 rooms for 1.926.000 people. Almost 1 room/capita, quite luxuriously, you might say. But the counting includes all inhabitable places with 4 walls and a ceiling and it doesn't say that some individuals may own 40 of those :)
There are 174 lines of public transportation (bus, tram, trolleybus) - a monthly permit is 40 lei and a daily one 7 lei.
Last but not least, of real high interest is the number of cars: 1 million, vs 80 000 parking places.
